Rademaker's Hopjes are old Dutch sweets with coffee and caramel flavour. You should only suck and not chew them because of the relatively hard surface. The Haagse Hopjes originated in the 18th century and were named after baron Hendrik Hop who lived in Brussels during the French occupation by the end of the century. He was drinking coffee all day and once forgot his coffee with sugar and cream on the oven. Next day, after the liquid had evaporated he tasted the residue and was enthusiastic about the fine flavor and taste of this first pocket coffee. On his request, his friend Van Haaren created a goodie made of coffee, caramel, cream and butter. These first Hopjes immediately hit the bullseye. The baron served the Hopjes to his guests and so they soon became popular. Although they originated in Brussels they were later named Haagse Hopjes.
